Zero-click search: what advertising still delivers

A majority of searches now end without a click. That is not the end of search marketing, but it does end one way of measuring it.

Zero-click search: what advertising still delivers

Key points

  • Being the answer is worth something even when nobody visits.
  • Local, transactional and brand queries still produce clicks.
  • Measure influence, not only sessions, or you will misread the situation entirely.

Most searches now end on the results page. The user got what they needed from a snippet, a map card, a knowledge panel or a generated answer.

What still clicks

Query typeClick behaviour
Buy, book, order, priceclicks, reliably
Local, near me, open nowclicks to directions, calls
Brand nameclicks to the site
Complex or high-value researchclicks to verify
Specific documents or downloadsclicks
Simple facts, definitions, hoursno click
How does, what is, whyincreasingly no click

The commercially valuable queries are largely in the top half. The traffic-generating informational queries are in the bottom.

A business losing informational traffic and keeping transactional traffic has lost sessions and kept revenue. Those are not the same loss.

Value without a click

Three things happen when a search result answers the question with your name on it.

Recognition. Your business name appears in the context of an authoritative answer.

Direct action. For local queries, the call, the directions request and the click to the booking system all happen from the result. Those are conversions that never appear as sessions.

Later search. A proportion of people who saw your name search for it directly afterwards. That shows as direct or brand traffic and is attributed to nothing.

The measurement adjustment

Reporting built on sessions will show decline. Add measures that capture what is happening.

  1. Impressions and average position from search console data, which show visibility even without clicks.
  2. Actions from the map listing: calls, direction requests, website clicks, message enquiries.
  3. Brand search volume, tracked monthly and free.
  4. Direct traffic, as a proxy for people who saw you and came back.
  5. Total enquiries, which is the number that actually matters.

If total enquiries are stable while sessions fall, the situation is fine and the reporting is wrong.

What to do about it

Optimise for the result, not the click. If your opening hours, price range and phone number appear in the result, the searcher does not need your homepage and you have still won.

Complete your listings. For local businesses the map listing now does much of the work the website used to. Photographs, hours, attributes, questions answered, reviews responded to.

Keep transactional pages strong. These still receive clicks and produce revenue.

Reduce dependence. A customer list, a newsletter and a reputation are not subject to anyone else's interface changes.

The honest summary

Search remains the largest channel for most businesses. What has changed is that the visit is no longer the unit of value, and any strategy built on maximising visits is optimising for a metric that has come loose from the business.

Frequently asked questions

What proportion of searches end without a click?

Estimates vary by market and query type; a majority is the common finding, and the share is rising.

Does this mean search marketing is finished?

No. It means traffic is a poorer proxy for value than it used to be.
