Connected TV instead of classic spots

Key points

  • The large screen and unskippable format deliver genuine attention.
  • Digital-style metrics from a shared-screen medium need television-style caveats.
  • Frequency capping is the control that matters most and is most often left off.

Connected television means advertising served inside streaming content viewed on a television set. It combines the format of broadcast with the buying mechanics of digital.

What is genuinely good

Attention. A large screen, a seated viewer, and no skip button. Measured attention is far above mobile video and comparable to broadcast.

Targeting. Geographic to a fine level, plus household characteristics and in some cases first-party data matching. Broadcast cannot do this.

Accessibility. Entry budgets far below traditional television, which brings the medium within reach of regional advertisers.

Flexibility. Campaigns can start and stop quickly, and creative can be changed without renegotiating a schedule.

What needs caution

The metrics look digital and describe a television situation.

MetricWhat it actually means
Completion rate above 95 %the file played to the end
Impressionsthe advertisement was served to a household
Unique reachhouseholds, not people
Attributed conversionsmatched by device, often the wrong person
Viewabilityusually reported as 100 %, which is meaningless here
A completion rate of 97 per cent tells you the advertisement could not be skipped. It tells you nothing about whether anybody was in the room.

Frequency is the real problem

The most common complaint about streaming advertising, from viewers, is seeing the same advertisement repeatedly within one programme.

That is a frequency capping failure and it damages the advertiser more than the platform. Set a cap, verify it applies across the whole campaign rather than per placement, and check it during the flight.

Where multiple platforms are bought, capping across them is difficult and largely unsolved. Buying fewer platforms with tighter control is often better than broad distribution.

Production

The requirement is a television-standard film. A vertical social video does not transfer; a horizontal film with small text does not read at viewing distance.

The specification: horizontal, high resolution, audio mixed for a living room rather than headphones, text large enough to read at three metres, and the brand present throughout rather than only at the end, since the viewer may look away.

Buying routes

Directly from the streaming platforms, through the broadcasters' own on-demand services, or programmatically through demand-side platforms.

Direct buying from a broadcaster's on-demand service typically offers better inventory quality and content adjacency. Programmatic offers broader reach and introduces the usual intermediation costs.

Where it fits

Strongest for regional brand building, launches, recruitment and anything requiring a large-screen impression at a budget below broadcast.

Weakest for direct response, because the viewer is not holding a device and will not act during the programme. Expect the effect in brand search and later enquiries rather than immediate clicks.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from ordinary online video?

The screen, the viewing posture and the fact that it usually cannot be skipped. Attention is substantially higher than on a phone.

What is the entry budget?

Considerably lower than broadcast. Meaningful regional campaigns are possible in the low four figures plus production.
