Print advertising is not dead, just pricier
Circulation has fallen and cost per contact has risen. What has also risen is the attention a printed page receives, and that changes the sum.
Print & Out-of-Home
Small circulations, high cost per thousand, and almost no waste. For business-to-business advertisers this is frequently the most efficient channel available.

Trade publications have small circulations and high rates per thousand. They are also read attentively by exactly the people who make specification decisions.
The media pack will lead with reader numbers. The useful questions are different.
| Question | Why |
|---|---|
| Which job titles read it | decides relevance |
| Which companies subscribe | tells you if your buyers are there |
| Is circulation audited or claimed | credibility of the figure |
| Controlled or paid subscription | paid readers read more |
| Average time spent with an issue | attention |
| What proportion is passed on | multiplies reach |
Controlled circulation, where copies are sent free to qualified recipients, produces larger numbers and lower engagement than paid subscription.
Trade publications need technical content and have small editorial teams. A well-written article on a genuine technical problem is frequently accepted and is read far more attentively than any advertisement.
The rules: it must be genuinely useful, not a product pitch. Name the problem, explain the approach, and let the author credit do the marketing.
Most trade publishers will discuss an editorial contribution alongside an advertising booking, and the combination costs little more than the advertisement alone.
Trade publications run themed issues on a published schedule, and those issues are kept longer and referenced more.
Request the editorial calendar for the year, identify the two or three issues that match your product, and book those. It is a more efficient use of the same budget than spreading insertions evenly.
Trade readers are technical and sceptical. Advertising that works in this environment is specific: a named application, a figure, a technical claim that can be checked.
Lifestyle imagery and abstract claims are ignored. A photograph of the product installed in a recognisable industrial setting with the specification alongside is read.
Trade advertising rarely produces an immediate purchase. It produces a data request, a sample enquiry or a search.
Provide something worth requesting: a datasheet, a technical guide, a sample, a calculation tool. That converts a reader into a contact, which is the actual objective.
Most trade publications produce an annual directory. Listings are cheap, permanent for a year, and consulted at the moment of specification. They are among the most cost-effective placements in B2B media.
Request the media pack, the reader survey and the circulation audit. Ask which companies subscribe, not how many readers there are.
Both. The article builds authority, the advertisement provides the response route.
