Google Ads: what clicks actually cost in 2026
Cost per click is the most widely misread number in online marketing. Look only at it and you will pay more per customer than the competitor with the pricier click.

Twenty accounts with 5,000 followers usually beat one with 100,000. The reason is not price but proximity.

The market talks about big names and works with small ones. Accounts between 1,000 and 25,000 followers are the segment where most collaborations actually happen, for three sound reasons.
The pattern is consistent across platforms and years.
| Followers | Typical engagement |
|---|---|
| 1,000 to 5,000 | 6 to 12 % |
| 5,000 to 25,000 | 3 to 6 % |
| 25,000 to 100,000 | 2 to 4 % |
| 100,000 to 1 million | 1 to 2 % |
| over 1 million | under 1.5 % |
A 5,000-follower account at 8 per cent reaches 400 engaged people. A 200,000-follower account at 1.2 per cent reaches 2,400, at perhaps thirty times the cost.
A small account knows its audience. Questions in the comments get answered by the person, not a manager. A recommendation there reads as a recommendation from an acquaintance.
Twenty collaborations produce twenty sets of photographs and videos in twenty settings. If your usage rights are properly agreed, that material becomes the raw stock for a year of advertising.
Compared with a studio production, the cost per usable asset is often lower by a factor of five, and the material performs better in paid channels because it does not look like advertising.
The most overlooked source is your own follower list and customer base. People who already buy from you and post regularly are the most credible partners available, and often the cheapest.
Search your followers for accounts above 1,000 followers, check the four selection numbers, and write to them personally. Response rates from that source are far higher than cold outreach, because a relationship already exists.
Through location and interest hashtags, in your own follower list, and among existing customers. The last source is the best and the least used.
Below roughly 5,000 followers often yes, if the product is genuinely relevant. Above that, expect a fee.

Most accounts grow wild. After two years nobody remembers why a given ad group exists. A structure that is still readable after a hundred changes.

Online Advertising
A campaign type that plays across every channel and shows you almost nothing. For some firms it is the strongest lever available; for others an expensive trap.
