Local sponsorship done right

Most local sponsorship is a donation with a logo attached. Made deliberate, it is one of the most durable forms of local presence available.

Local sponsorship done right

Key points

  • A logo on a shirt is not sponsorship; it is a donation with a receipt.
  • Ask what you get, in writing, before agreeing.
  • The right fit is where the members are the customers.

Local sponsorship happens because someone asks. It is agreed out of goodwill, delivers a logo somewhere, and is renewed annually without review.

Decide what you want from it

Three legitimate objectives, and they lead to different agreements.

Presence, so being visibly part of the community, which supports recruitment and long-term standing. Access, so contact with the members, who are your customers. Reciprocity, so members and their families choosing you because you support them.

The third only happens if the members know, which requires more than a logo.

A logo on a shirt is seen by the opposing team. The sponsorship works when the club tells its members that you are the reason they have the kit.

The strongest local sponsorships are unglamorous: a plumbing firm sponsoring the youth section of a club whose parents are homeowners in the catchment.

Ask for the specifics in writing

Before agreeing, establish exactly what is delivered.

  1. Where the name appears, at what size, for how long.
  2. Whether the club communicates the sponsorship to members, and how.
  3. Access to the members' list, subject to data protection, or the ability to have something included in club communications.
  4. Presence at events, so a stand, a banner, an announcement.
  5. Photography rights, so you can use images of the sponsored team.
  6. Whether it is exclusive within your trade.

Point six is frequently overlooked and produces the situation where two competing firms sponsor the same club.

Activation is where the value is

The sponsorship fee buys the right. Activation is what turns it into an effect, and it usually costs a fraction of the fee.

Practical activation: a photograph of the team handover published locally, an offer for club members, presence at two events a year, a mention in your own material, and a short note to the club's members explaining what you do.

Firms that pay the fee and do nothing else get roughly nothing.

Duration

Local sponsorship compounds. One year is invisible; five years makes you the firm associated with that club.

Prefer a smaller annual commitment sustained for years over a large one-off.

The exit

Ending a sponsorship in a small community requires care. Give notice at the end of a season, explain the reason, and offer to help find a successor. Handled badly, ending a sponsorship costs more goodwill than the sponsorship ever generated.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a local business sponsor?

Whatever it costs, judged against what is delivered. A £2,000 sponsorship with real activation beats £5,000 for a logo on a hoarding.

Is it tax deductible?

Where a genuine advertising benefit is received it is usually a business expense; a pure donation is treated differently. Check the position locally.

Circulation has fallen and cost per contact has risen. What has also risen is the attention a printed page receives, and that changes the sum.

The rate card is a starting point, the position matters more than the size, and the readership figure is not the number you should plan with.
