Advertising for trade businesses
Most trade firms have too much work and too few staff. That inverts the entire advertising brief, and almost nobody adjusts for it.

A customer who buys once, plans for a year, and asks other suppliers who to use. The network matters more than the advertising.

Wedding work has no repeat business. Every customer is new, and almost every one asks the same question: who else should we use.
Photographers, florists, caterers, musicians, planners and venues all meet the couple at different points and are all asked for recommendations.
A supplier who is recommended by four others in the district receives a steady flow of enquiries at no cost. Building that network is the highest-return activity in the sector.
Practically: work well with others on the day, send them the images or the referral back, and stay in contact between seasons.
Most venues maintain a recommended supplier list. Being on it is the strongest position available, because the couple is choosing from a shortlist the venue has already vetted.
Getting on it requires: working there without causing problems, understanding the venue's constraints, being reliable about timings and access, and making the venue coordinator's day easier.
| Period | Activity |
|---|---|
| Jan to Mar | peak enquiry season, proposals over Christmas |
| Apr to Sep | delivery season, minimal marketing |
| Oct to Dec | following year's bookings, content production |
The enquiry peak is January and February. Marketing spend belongs there, not in summer when you are working.
Photographs of real weddings, not styled shoots. Complete price information. Reviews from couples, ideally with the venue named. Whether you have worked at their venue. And personal response, because they are choosing people who will be present at a significant private event.
The venue point is decisive. A supplier with a gallery of work at the specific venue is chosen over one without, almost regardless of other factors.
Couples build a budget early and eliminate suppliers who will not indicate cost. A starting price with what is included is the minimum.
Packages work in this sector because couples are managing many decisions and want the option simplified.
Ask about two weeks after the wedding, when the images have arrived and before ordinary life resumes. Response rates then are far higher than later.
The seasonality and the one-off nature make weddings a difficult sole business. Adjacent work using the same skills, so corporate events, private parties, anniversaries and commercial work, stabilises the year.
Selectively. The ones held at venues you want to work with are worth it as much for the supplier contacts as the couples.
Work there well, twice, and make the venue's job easier than the alternative supplier does.

Roofing demand is weather-driven, seasonal, and half of it is an emergency. Three different campaigns, not one.

Small callouts pay poorly and fill the diary. Advertising should be aimed at the three job types that actually carry the business.
