Advertising for electrical contractors

Small callouts pay poorly and fill the diary. Advertising should be aimed at the three job types that actually carry the business.

Key points

  • Advertise the high-value work: consumer units, charging points, solar connections, commercial contracts.
  • Certification and registration are your strongest trust signals; publish them prominently.
  • A minimum callout charge, stated openly, removes the worst enquiries.

An electrical business can be busy and unprofitable at the same time, because the diary fills with small jobs that cost more in travel and administration than they return.

Four job types carry most electrical businesses.

  1. Consumer unit replacement and rewiring. High value, planned, often triggered by a survey or a sale.
  2. Vehicle charging points. Growing, well-paid, and searched for by name.
  3. Solar and battery connections. Frequently subcontracted, and worth pursuing directly.
  4. Commercial maintenance contracts. Recurring revenue, predictable scheduling, the most valuable of the four.

Small domestic callouts should be handled, not advertised. They arrive anyway.

Every pound spent advertising for socket repairs buys a job that pays for the van's fuel. The same pound spent on charging points buys a job worth twenty times that.

Trust signals matter more here than in most trades

Electrical work carries safety risk, and customers know they cannot judge quality themselves. They substitute credentials.

Publish, visibly and on every relevant page: your registration and scheme membership with the number, insurance cover with the sum, the certification you issue on completion, and how long the guarantee runs.

Most competitors mention these in a footer. Putting them in the headline area of the service page is a measurable advantage.

The last row is underused. A dealership selling electric vehicles has a customer who needs a charger within a fortnight, and most dealerships have no reliable installer to recommend.

State a minimum charge

A visible minimum callout charge, for example "callout and first hour £145 including travel within 20 km", filters out enquiries you would decline anyway and pre-qualifies everyone who calls.

It reduces enquiry volume and raises the proportion that becomes work.

Commercial work is sold, not advertised

Maintenance contracts come from direct approach: property managers, housing associations, facilities companies, small manufacturers.

The tool is a one-page document showing response times, coverage, certification and pricing structure, delivered to a named person and followed up. Twenty of those, properly followed, produce more than a year of general advertising.

Frequently asked questions

Should small repairs be advertised at all?

Only if they lead somewhere. A socket replacement that becomes a rewiring survey is worth it; one that does not is a loss.

What works best for commercial work?

Direct approach to property managers and facilities companies, not advertising. Two contracts change the business more than a hundred callouts.

Most trade firms have too much work and too few staff. That inverts the entire advertising brief, and almost nobody adjusts for it.
