Advertising for trade businesses
Most trade firms have too much work and too few staff. That inverts the entire advertising brief, and almost nobody adjusts for it.

Online printers took the standard products at prices a local shop cannot match. What remains is everything that needs a person, and it is a better business.

Online printing has taken the commodity end of the market. A thousand business cards cannot be produced locally at the price a large-format online operation charges.
| Work type | Local advantage |
|---|---|
| Short runs and variable data | uneconomic online |
| Complex finishing | not offered or unreliable online |
| Urgent turnaround | hours against days |
| Large format and signage | needs local fitting |
| Files that need fixing | the biggest one |
| Colour-critical work | proofing and correction |
| Packaging and specials | bespoke |
The fifth row is the most underrated commercial advantage. A substantial share of customer files are wrong: no bleed, wrong colour space, missing fonts, low resolution.
An online printer rejects the file. A local printer fixes it, charges for it, and keeps the customer for years.
Businesses with recurring needs and no designer: practices, trades, restaurants, clubs and associations. They need small quantities regularly and value being able to phone someone.
Agencies and designers: they need reliability, accurate colour and delivery on the promised day, and they are less price-sensitive because their client is paying.
Public bodies and schools: recurring, tender-based, predictable.
Finishing is what customers cannot get cheaply elsewhere and what makes printed material feel considered: spot varnish, foiling, embossing, unusual stocks, folding and binding options.
Most print shops list these as capabilities. Showing them physically is what sells them. A sample folder given to every business customer produces orders for years.
Vehicle graphics, shop signage, exhibition material and outdoor banners all require local production and fitting. They are higher margin than sheet printing and they connect to the customer's other marketing.
A print shop that can produce the vehicle livery and the matching stationery is selling a system rather than a product.
Publish the turnaround times. Same-day for defined products, next-day for others, with a stated cut-off time.
That is the thing an online printer structurally cannot match, and it is the reason a customer with a deadline pays a premium without hesitating.
Paper certification, vegetable-based inks, local production and reduced transport are increasingly asked about by business customers with their own reporting obligations.
Documenting this properly, with the certifications rather than general claims, wins work from buyers who need to evidence it.
Not on standard products in standard quantities. On short runs, complex finishing and urgency, yes comfortably.
Businesses with recurring print needs and no in-house designer, and agencies who need reliability over price.

Small callouts pay poorly and fill the diary. Advertising should be aimed at the three job types that actually carry the business.
