Advertising for nonprofits and associations

No budget, a volunteer team, and three different audiences to reach. The constraints are real and the available leverage is larger than most organisations use.

Key points

  • One specific story outperforms any amount of aggregate need.
  • Regular givers are worth many times one-off donors; ask for the standing arrangement.
  • Grant programmes for advertising space exist and are underclaimed.

Nonprofits and associations market to three audiences at once: donors, volunteers and the people they serve. Each needs different material, and the budget is usually nil.

Specificity converts, statistics do not

The consistent finding in charitable giving research is that one identified case generates more response than a large number describing the same problem.

That is uncomfortable and useful. Write about one person, one animal, one project, with a name and a photograph, and state exactly what a specific amount achieves.

"Two million people lack clean water" produces sympathy. "£40 repairs the pump in this village, which serves 60 households" produces a donation.

Ask for the regular arrangement

Donor typeValue
One-off donationthe amount, once
Regular monthly giver10 to 30 times more over time
Member with subscriptionrecurring, plus engagement
Legacy pledgevery high, requires long relationship
Corporate partnerhigh, requires reciprocity

The gap between a one-off donation and a regular arrangement is the single largest lever in nonprofit fundraising, and the difference is often simply whether the regular option was offered clearly.

Free and discounted media

Several routes exist and are underclaimed: advertising grant programmes offered by major search platforms to registered charities, donated space from local newspapers and radio, unsold outdoor inventory offered at nominal cost, and printing donated by local businesses in exchange for acknowledgement.

Each requires an application and persistence. The return on that administrative effort is usually far higher than any amount of volunteer campaigning.

Volunteer recruitment is marketing

Volunteers are recruited with the same tools as staff and the same honesty. What the role actually involves, how much time, what support is given, and who to contact.

Vague appeals for help produce nobody. A specific request, such as three hours on a Saturday morning driving a van, produces volunteers.

Reporting back is fundraising

Donors who see what happened give again. Those who hear nothing until the next appeal frequently do not.

A short report, with photographs and figures, sent to everyone who gave, is the most effective retention activity available and costs almost nothing.

The transparency expectation

Donors increasingly check where money goes. Publishing the split between programme, fundraising and administration, and explaining it honestly, builds more trust than avoiding the subject.

Organisations that hide administrative costs are assumed to have something to hide.

Fundraising is regulated in most jurisdictions, with rules on solicitation, data protection for donor records, and in many cases registration requirements before public appeals. Check the position before running any campaign that collects money or personal data.

Frequently asked questions

Where does a nonprofit get advertising budget?

Free and discounted programmes from major platforms, donated media from local publishers, and in-kind support from businesses.

What converts donors best?

A specific person or case, a specific amount, and a specific outcome. Aggregate statistics do not.
