Advertising for landscaping firms

The whole market decides in six weeks of early spring. Everything else in the year is preparation for those six weeks.

Advertising for landscaping firms

Key points

  • Garden projects are decided in February and March; advertise in January.
  • Maintenance contracts stabilise a business that is otherwise entirely seasonal.
  • Drone footage of finished gardens is the strongest asset in this trade.

Landscaping has the sharpest seasonality of any trade. Demand concentrates in a short window and the advertising must arrive before it opens.

The calendar

MonthWhat to advertise
Nov to Decmaintenance contracts, tree work, planning
Jangarden design and larger projects for spring
Feb to Marthe peak; everything, at full budget
Apr to Junexecution; advertise only for autumn work
Jul to Augmaintenance, watering, holiday cover
Sep to Octplanting season, lawn renovation, autumn projects

The critical line is January. By March the diary is full and advertising spend produces enquiries you must decline.

Two products, different customers

Project work. A garden redesign is a considered purchase of £8,000 to £60,000, decided over weeks, usually by a couple, usually after seeing something they liked.

Maintenance. Recurring, lower margin, but it stabilises the year and produces the project work later. Existing maintenance customers commission a substantial share of larger projects.

Maintenance is not the low-value part of the business. It is the pipeline for the high-value part, spread over years.

What sells project work

Photographs, and specifically photographs from above. A drone image showing the whole garden before and after communicates the transformation in a way that ground-level shots cannot.

Beyond that: a plan drawing alongside the finished photograph, which shows that you design rather than only build; the plant list, because customers care and competitors omit it; and a stated price band per project type.

The design fee question

Firms that give away design work compete on price for the build. Firms that charge for design, even modestly, attract more serious customers and lose fewer quotations to competitors who copy the plan.

A common structure: a design fee of £600 to £1,800 depending on size, credited against the build if commissioned. It filters enquiries and pays for the drawing time.

Weather is a content opportunity

Search interest in gardens follows the weather with a lag of about three days. The first warm weekend in March produces a spike in searches for terraces, lawns and planting.

Have the content ready before it. A page on lawn renovation published in April has missed the moment.

Local proof matters unusually much

Garden work is seen by neighbours. A completed project in a street generates enquiries from that street for two years.

Make that deliberate: a small discreet sign during the work, a leaflet to the twenty nearest houses after completion, and a photograph credited to the district in your online material.

Frequently asked questions

What do you do in winter?

Sell next season, sell maintenance contracts, and do the tree work and hard landscaping that does not depend on planting.

Are maintenance contracts worth the low margin?

Yes, because they smooth cash flow and keep you in front of customers who later commission larger work.

Advertising for trade businesses

Most trade firms have too much work and too few staff. That inverts the entire advertising brief, and almost nobody adjusts for it.

Advertising for roofing companies

Roofing demand is weather-driven, seasonal, and half of it is an emergency. Three different campaigns, not one.

Advertising for electrical contractors

Small callouts pay poorly and fill the diary. Advertising should be aimed at the three job types that actually carry the business.
