Advertising for trade businesses
Most trade firms have too much work and too few staff. That inverts the entire advertising brief, and almost nobody adjusts for it.

Two thirds of the year is quiet and a quarter of the revenue arrives in December. The advertising calendar has to reflect that, and the trust problem does not go away.

Jewellery retail concentrates revenue into a few weeks and carries a permanent trust question, because customers cannot judge quality or value themselves.
The highest-value and most heavily researched purchase in the category. The buyer spends weeks online, is anxious about getting it wrong, and often has never bought jewellery before.
What they search for: what to spend, how to find the ring size, the difference between stone qualities, and whether a lab-grown stone is acceptable.
Answering those questions honestly, with prices, is the most effective marketing available in this category and is largely absent from the market.
| Service | Season | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Repairs and restringing | year round | brings footfall |
| Watch servicing | year round | recurring, high value |
| Valuation for insurance | year round | positions expertise |
| Remodelling inherited pieces | year round | high margin, emotional |
| Engagement | spring, December | highest value |
| Gift purchase | December, May | volume |
Rows one to four are the business between the peaks, and almost nobody advertises them. Remodelling in particular is high margin and generates strong stories.
Jewellery photographs badly. Reflections, scale and colour accuracy all defeat phone photography, and poor images actively damage a premium positioning.
This is one of the few retail categories where professional product photography pays for itself directly. Failing that, a consistent setup with diffused light and a fixed background, used for everything, at least produces coherence.
Customers cannot verify carat, clarity or metal content. They substitute signals.
Publish: the certifications you provide, your membership of trade bodies, how long the business has traded, the return policy, and the servicing you carry out yourself rather than sending away.
For branded watches, authorised dealer status is the single strongest signal and should be prominent.
A quarter or more of annual revenue in six weeks means the advertising must start in early November, when the consideration begins, not in December when the decision is made.
Practical: gift guidance content published in October, appointment booking for personal shopping, and a clear statement of the last order date for engraving and sizing.
Jewellery is a relationship purchase. The customer who bought an engagement ring returns for the wedding rings, the anniversary, and the christening gift.
A record of what each customer bought, and a note before the anniversary, is worth more than any campaign and requires only discipline.
For branded watches and standard items yes, for bespoke work the enquiry matters more than the transaction.
On authorised dealership, servicing, warranty handling and the ability to see it. Say all four.

Small callouts pay poorly and fill the diary. Advertising should be aimed at the three job types that actually carry the business.
