Advertising for trade businesses
Most trade firms have too much work and too few staff. That inverts the entire advertising brief, and almost nobody adjusts for it.

A crowded market with no barriers to entry, where credibility is the only scarce resource and most people try to buy it with claims.

Coaching and training has low barriers to entry, which means the market is full and the buyer cannot easily tell the difference. That is the marketing problem in one sentence.
"I help people reach their potential" competes with everyone. "I work with newly promoted engineering managers in their first year" competes with almost nobody and is instantly recognisable to the right person.
The narrower definition also makes every subsequent marketing decision easier: where to publish, what to write, which conferences, which language.
| Method | Credibility |
|---|---|
| Free workshop or talk | very high |
| Written analysis of a real situation | high |
| Recorded session excerpt, with consent | very high |
| Client results with figures | very high |
| Testimonials without specifics | low |
| Certification logos | low, everyone has them |
The bottom two are what most coaches lead with. The top ones require doing something visible and are far more persuasive.
Corporate training pays better, schedules in advance and repeats. Individual coaching is more variable, harder to fill and generates the stories and reputation that win corporate work.
Most sustainable practices run both: individual work as the reputation engine, corporate work as the revenue.
The buyer differs entirely. Corporate buyers are HR or a department head, they buy against a defined problem, and they need a proposal, references and a price. Individuals buy on personal connection.
Step three is where most people hesitate and where the sale actually happens.
Coaching is unregulated in most jurisdictions, but adjacent territory is not. Claims that stray into therapy, medical or psychological treatment, or into financial advice, engage entirely different rules.
Keep the language clearly on the coaching side, and refer on where appropriate. It is both safer and more credible.
Transformation language without specifics. Photographs on mountaintops. Certifications listed as though they were qualifications the buyer recognises. Pricing hidden until a discovery call, which is now widely read as a sales tactic.
By showing the work rather than describing it, and by being specific about who you help and with what.
Corporate, for predictability and rate. Individual work is better for reputation and content.

Small callouts pay poorly and fill the diary. Advertising should be aimed at the three job types that actually carry the business.
