Advertising for bricks-and-mortar retail

The shop competes with a phone in the customer's hand. It wins on immediacy, advice and the things a delivery cannot do.

Key points

  • Stock visibility online is the single largest lever for physical retail.
  • The window and the entrance area outperform any advertising budget.
  • Local search intent, so open now, near me, in stock, is where the winnable traffic is.

The customer standing in your shop has a price comparison in their pocket. That is the condition, and it is not going to change.

What physical retail actually sells

Three things a delivery cannot: having it today, telling the customer which one to buy, and taking it back without a process.

All three should appear in the advertising, and usually none of them do.

A shop advertising its range is competing with the internet on the internet's terms. A shop advertising that the thing is here now, and someone will show you how it works, is competing on its own.

Stock visibility is the biggest lever

People search for a product plus their town, or use "in stock near me". If your stock is invisible online, that search finds someone else.

Options, in increasing order of effort: publish your main lines as pages with prices; list stock in a local inventory feed if your sector supports one; keep the map listing's product attributes current; and answer stock enquiries by message within minutes.

Even a simple page reading "we hold these 40 items in stock, call to reserve" captures traffic that currently goes elsewhere.

The last row is the discipline most shops lack. A display unchanged for three months stops being seen by everyone who passes daily.

Local search and map presence

The winnable online traffic for a shop is local and immediate: opening hours, directions, whether you have something, whether you are open now.

Get the basics exactly right, keep photographs current, and answer questions posted on the listing. It costs a few hours a month and outperforms most paid advertising.

The customer list

Retail without a customer list restarts from zero every day. With one, you can tell 400 people that the thing they asked about has arrived.

Collect it at the till with a clear purpose, respect the consent rules, and use it sparingly, perhaps monthly, with actual news rather than generic offers.

Events and reasons to come

A shop needs occasional reasons for a visit that is not a purchase: a demonstration, a repair day, a seasonal opening, a supplier visit.

These work because they convert the shop from a place you go when you need something into a place you go.

What rarely pays

Discount advertising against online prices. Printed advertisements without an offer or a date. Loyalty applications for infrequent purchases. Paid reach beyond the catchment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a small shop need an online shop?

Usually not. It needs its stock to be findable online, which is a different and much cheaper thing.

What about price competition?

You cannot win it. Compete on availability today, advice, service and returns handled in person.
