Advertising for trade businesses
Most trade firms have too much work and too few staff. That inverts the entire advertising brief, and almost nobody adjusts for it.

Electric bikes changed the trade from a low-margin retail business into a high-value service business. The advertising has not caught up.

The bicycle trade has been transformed by electric bikes: higher prices, higher margins, more service requirement, and a customer who is older and more cautious.
Nobody buys a £3,200 electric bike they have not ridden. That is the structural advantage over online retail and it should be the primary call to action.
Make it frictionless: bookable online, with the models available shown, a route suggested, and no obligation. Where possible, an extended loan over a weekend.
| Revenue stream | Character |
|---|---|
| New bike sales | seasonal, high value, competitive |
| Electric bike sales | high value, high margin, service-linked |
| Service and repair | year-round, high margin, recurring |
| Annual service plans | predictable, retains customers |
| Parts and accessories | attaches to both |
| Rental | seasonal, tourist areas, marketing for sales |
Rows three and four are the stable base. A service plan sold with every electric bike guarantees the customer returns annually and keeps the relationship out of the reach of online sellers.
Buyers of electric bikes are anxious about range, motor position, battery life and total cost. Most manufacturer marketing does not answer those questions honestly.
Content that converts: real range in local conditions with a laden rider, what a replacement battery costs and when it is needed, the difference between motor positions in practice, and what the service intervals actually cost.
Sales concentrate in spring, service in spring and autumn, repairs after the first good weekend.
The commercial risk is winter. Countermeasures: winter service pricing to spread the workshop load, storage over winter, and pre-season booking for spring service.
Commuters, who buy on reliability and want quick service turnaround. Cargo bike families, a small high-value segment. Older leisure riders, the largest electric bike group. Employer-funded schemes, where available, which are a structural channel most shops underuse.
Cycling is social. A shop that runs rides, supports a local club, or hosts a maintenance evening builds the kind of word of mouth that no advertising buys.
That is also the recruitment channel for mechanics, who are as scarce here as in the motor trade.
Decisive for electric bikes. Almost nobody buys one they have not ridden, which is the shop's advantage over online.
Yes. Workshop capacity is often the constraint, but repair customers become purchase customers.

Small callouts pay poorly and fill the diary. Advertising should be aimed at the three job types that actually carry the business.
